Owner of Detroits historic Hotel Charlevoix seeks demolition

The owner of Detroits historic Hotel Charlevoix building in Grand Circus Park is seeking permission to destroy it.The 2029 Park Ave. structure is in such disrepair that pieces of the building recently have fallen onto the street.At 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, the City Historic Commission will hold a public hearing at the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center that could approve the proposed demolition.

The Charlevoix is owned by Ralph Sachs. The building has been closed for more than two decades, according to the website historicdetroit.org. The Charlevoix opened in 1905, according to the website.The sidewalk surrounding the building has been fenced off for several weeks to prevent possible debris from the crumbling building falling onto passersby and traffic. The Charlevoix is across the street from Cliff Bells and Park Bar.
