State Savings Bank called “Fantastic, Gorgeous” by new owners

This is a great story of David beating Goliath. The people in the Metro Detroit Area, welcome outside investors. We need the influx of people, businesses and money. That being said, we want to preserve the sanctity of our beautiful buildings. I am thrilled to hear that the Apostolopoulos family heard the voices of the people of Detroit, and are going to keep the State Savings Bank building in its glory and not a parking structure.

Owners of State Savings Bank Now Call It “Fantastic, Gorgeous” Monday, September 10, 2012, by Sarah Cox

It’s looking like the uproar over the proposal to turn the State Savings Bank into parking has got the owners backpedaling on the plans. (For the record, this blog called it one of the worst ideas ever so we’re feeling a little “told ya so,” today). Triples Properties, the Toronto firm that owns the building, told The Windsor Star that they hope to repurpose the building, which happens to to be the only Detroit structure designed by the firm McKim, Mead and White. (They designed the now-demolished Penn Station in New York and that preservation loss remains a tragedy today).

Said Steve Apostolopoulos, co-founder of Triple Properties, “I toured the building. The building is fantastic, it’s gorgeous. So beautiful. Our first choice is not to knock it down.”

This is a reversal of what Steve’s father told the Free Press, which they now blame on his accent. Seriously.

Steve Apostolopoulos said demolition was never Triple Properties’ preferred outcome and the uproar was all a misunderstanding. “My father has a very thick accent, so maybe they misheard him,” he said.

In any case, sounds like Triple Properties just found a new spokesman.

Detroit has crazy-sick beautiful architecture. I took a class an architecture class at OU a handful of years back and the teacher took us through ever inch of every respectable building in Detroit, it was mindblowing!
